5 Series, 5 Months Campaign - Intro to Series 3

Dear readers,

#Because it’s Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day today! Not the number of books 😁

#October #NewMonth #HappyIndependence

What happens when you run an organization where mistakes mean death, loyalty is everything, and performance reviews end with a gunshot?

Welcome to the Nigerian Assassin Series – October’s feature in the 5 Series, 5 Months campaign, where HR Meets the Underworld.

Born from a Wattpad contest in 2019, what began as one short story spiralled into five gripping books — each weaving love, danger, choices, and consequences. And through it all, one truth emerges: every organization, even a criminal one, needs HR.

Series Description: A woman has to choose between doing her job and keeping the man of her dreams alive. Any decision she makes comes with a consequence.

The journey of this series will conclude (for now) with a bold twist: The Assassin’s Rule Book — coming soon.

This is no ordinary story. It’s a handbook. A manifesto. A chilling yet fascinating look at the 100 rules that govern the Mirror People, the deadliest organization in fiction. And while these rules are written for killers, the lessons reflect real workplace principles about loyalty, accountability, and culture.

October is for assassins, and for HR. Each Friday, I’ll share lessons from Keep or Kill, the book that started it all, written during one of Lagos State’s notorious gridlocks, where two hours of standstill traffic became a burst of creativity instead of frustration.

Grab a free copy of Keep Or Kill HERE and join me as Fiction meets Function this Friday.

Inspector Osbourne Investigations - Week 4

Dear readers,

#Because it's Week 4 of the Inspector Osbourne Investigations

#Friday #September #TGIF

Every Choice Has a Consequence

From the murderer to the inspector, Hotel Room Murder reminds us that every choice has weight. Some characters made tiny compromises that spiraled into life-changing consequences. Others ignored early red flags, only to pay the price later.

In organizations, it’s no different. Employees are free to make choices — but no one is free from the consequences. Culture must make that clear. Accountability is not punishment; it’s the recognition that decisions shape outcomes for everyone.

👉 The workplace lesson: Choices may be free, but consequences aren’t. Responsibility is non-negotiable.

Inspector Osbourne Investigations - Week 3

Dear readers,

#Because it's Week 3 of the Inspector Osbourne Investigations

When Teams Crack Under Pressure

A hotel murder isn’t just a test for the inspector — it’s a pressure cooker for the suspects. Under interrogation, alliances crumble. Friends turn on friends. Lies unravel. Everyone scrambles to protect themselves, even if it means throwing others under the bus.

Organizations under pressure often look the same. When targets are unrealistic or leadership rules with fear, teamwork collapses. Colleagues stop collaborating and start competing, hoarding information, or shifting blame.

👉 The workplace lesson: Resilient teams aren’t built in crisis — they’re built in safety. Trust and psychological safety must be nurtured long before the pressure hits.

Inspector Osbourne Investigations - Week 2

Dear readers,

#Because it's Week 2 of the Inspector Osbourne Investigations

#Friday #September #TGIF

The Bias of the Investigator

Even Inspector Osbourne, sharp as he is, battles bias. In Hotel Room Murder, his first instincts about the guilty party are shaped by assumptions — about background, about appearance, about reputation. Those biases almost steer him in the wrong direction.

Leaders do the same. In recruitment, performance reviews, or conflict resolution, bias creeps in silently. We “trust” certain profiles more. We give the benefit of the doubt to those who look or sound like us. But bias clouds judgment and sabotages fairness.

👉 The workplace lesson: HR must recognise, check, and train against bias. Fairness isn’t optional — it’s the foundation of trust.

Inspector Osbourne Investigations - Week 1

When High Performers Break The Rules

In Hotel Room Murder, one of the suspects is known for brilliance. They get results. They always seem to be one step ahead of everyone else. But beneath the charm and talent lies a troubling truth: their success often comes at the expense of ethics. Corners are cut, rules are bent, and others clean up the mess.

Sound familiar? Every workplace has the “star performer” whose numbers impress but whose behaviour undermines trust. HR’s toughest task isn’t just hiring great talent but ensuring that performance doesn’t excuse misconduct.

👉 The workplace lesson: Protect culture over short-term wins. A rule-breaking star is not an asset, they’re a liability in disguise.

5 Series, 5 Months Campaign - Intro to Series 2

Dear readers,

#Because my 45th book launches this month. Not the age 😁

#September #NewMonth #NewBook

Faced With Murder — the third Inspector Tunde Osbourne case — drops on 28th September 2025. Packed with twists, drama, and suspense, it just might be his toughest case yet.

Description:
A distressed woman reports a mysterious pregnancy after a massage session, and Inspector Tunde Osbourne is reluctantly drawn into the case, hoping to close it before the day ends. But what begins as a routine inquiry quickly unravels into a web of evasive employees, vanished records, and a secret strong enough to shatter reputations. When the trail leads to a confrontation that could end in murder, the inspector must decide how far he is willing to go for the truth.

So this month’s 5 Series, 5 Months spotlight is The Inspector Tunde Osbourne Investigations — following Lagos’ finest detective through crimes (especially murders).

The first published book, Hotel Room Murder (written in 2020, longlisted for the Quramo Writers’ Prize the same year, and published in 2021), wasn’t actually the first I wrote. That honour goes to Murder On Site (written in 2018, published in 2023), inspired by my time in a construction company, where I quickly learned how easily a body could be hidden on site 😅. I held it back at first, rewriting it until the story felt accessible, understandable, and relatable beyond the industry.

Hotel Room Murder came after long hours of searching for an unpredictable plot, and when it finally hit me, even I was wowed! In this story, Inspector Osbourne teams up with one of my private investigators, and together, they crack the case. Grab a free copy of Hotel Room Murder HERE and join me as Fiction meets Function this Friday.

What to learn about Performance Reviews from a Fictional Marriage Plot

Performance reviews in 'Dim Noo Abroad' come in the form of gossip, reputation, and public image.    No one evaluates based on actual connection or effort — only on who appears most “married.”

In workplaces, when reviews focus on surface-level results or popularity instead of process and values, trust erodes and bias thrives.

✅ Evaluate people for what they contribute, not what they claim.

Work Hard, Play Hard: Team Lessons from Abeokuta

Dear readers,

#Because it’s been a month since our office retreat.

#Work #Retreat #August

In the spirit of 'Fiction Meets Function', I wanted to share a few reflections from our unforgettable experience at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta.

#OOPL is more than a serene and relaxing destination; it’s a vault of knowledge, history, and inspiration. The perfect backdrop to unwind, reconnect, and reflect as a team.

When you work with a dedicated, hardworking, and genuinely friendly team, extraordinary things happen. The retreat proved this and more. Nearly everyone was present, and to those who stayed back to keep the engine running, know that you’re seen, appreciated, and your moment will surely come.

The children who joined us, including my son, had such an amazing time that they didn’t want to leave. That speaks volumes about the kind of culture we’re building: one that values not just employees, but the families that support them too.

They say “work is work and not family”, but when you’re surrounded by a boss who leads with head, heart, and humour, and colleagues who are as fun as they are focused, the line truly begins to blur. For many of us, this workplace feels like home.

At our first Town Hall of the year, I had the privilege of leading the HR & You session on workplace culture and policies. The biggest takeaway? Work hard, play hard — because that’s how we sustain balance.

As part of that session, we also inaugurated our Play Committee: a group dedicated to planning fun and engaging activities. They absolutely delivered! Special shoutout to our HR & Admin intern, who continues to go above and beyond to get things done.

And yes — my son, a few brave colleagues, and I made it all the way to the top of Olumo Rock 😎. What better way to crown such a memorable retreat?

Lessons & HR Insights:
-Work-life balance is culture in action, not theory. When people see both hard work and play encouraged, they thrive.

-Shared experiences outside the office fuel stronger collaboration inside it. Retreats are investments, not extras.

-Inclusivity strengthens belonging. When families feel welcome, employees feel more connected.

-Empower interns and young talent. Give them ownership, and they’ll surprise you with leadership.

-Leadership by example matters. A boss who leads with humour and heart sets the tone for the entire team.

Looking ahead, I’m excited for what’s to come!

Guinness World Record - Nigeria Reading Marathon

Dear readers,

#Because Nigeria is beating a Guinness World Record!

#Reading #NigerianBook #August  Yesterday evening, I stopped by to cheer on the Read Aloud Team, who have been reading books by Nigerian authors since August 12th. Their goal is to break the Guinness World Record for the Longest Marathon Reading Aloud by a Team, while also raising awareness for literature and literacy.

So far, they’ve surpassed 365 hours, and they’re still going strong! 📚🔥

I’m delighted to have donated books, and excited that they’ll also be reading my novel, Murder On Site.

Validation, Titles, and The Trap of Empty Promises

In the book, many of the women stay stuck in toxic “relationships” with men abroad they barely know, just for the prestige of the title: “married.”

It’s the same in many organizations: people cling to titles and roles that no longer serve them, just to feel important.

HR must create cultures where impact is valued more than appearance, and real connection trumps fake recognition.

What the Western Union Scene teaches about Team Loyalty

In one of my favourite scenes in Dim Noo Abroad, several women gather at a Western Union office, each waiting to collect money from her husband abroad.

What unfolds isn’t just comedy, it’s a test of truth, loyalty, and hidden power dynamics. Who really trusts who? Who’s faking it to keep up appearances?

In leadership, just like in friendship, the people closest to you may not be rooting for you.

The three types of team players

From “ride or die” loyalists to selfish climbers and accidental disruptors, "Dim Noo Abroad" shows us three kinds of people you’ll find in any workplace:

1. The Caros – Quiet observers who see the whole picture but are often ignored.

2. The Miracles – Strategic performers who don’t mind bending rules.

3. The Dumebis – Well-meaning but easily influenced and confused under pressure.

In your team, who gets rewarded? Who gets sidelined? And who truly makes culture work?

When Marriage Is A KPI

10 women. 1 goal: Marry a man abroad. But behind the drama is a lesson in people, culture, and management.

In my novel Dim Noo Abroad, the Eastern Nigerian marriage market is a battleground. The girls strategise, gossip, lie, and manipulate their way towards one goal: status.

Sounds like workplace politics? That’s because it is.

From Miracle’s high-performance, low-integrity hustle, to Dumebi’s desperate decision-making, to Caro’s overlooked wisdom, every character mirrors someone you’ve worked with.

As we begin the Desperate Wives Series under Where Fiction Meets Function, I’ll unpack 10 real HR lessons from this fictional drama novel.

1. Don’t Hire for Image — Hire for Intention
Character: Stella
Insight: Stella’s obsession with projecting the “perfect married image” mirrors many hires made for aesthetics or social fit rather than alignment of values. In organizations, when people are recruited to look the part (titles, accents, affiliations) instead of being the part, chaos follows.

2. Performance Without Integrity is a Risk
Character: Miracle
Insight: Miracle is sharp, manipulative, and can get things done, but often by crossing moral lines. In the workplace, this is your “results at all costs” employee. They deliver, until the ethics committee gets involved.

3. Culture is Contagious — Especially the Toxic Kind
Group Dynamic: The 10 girls share a culture of desperation masked as ambition.
Insight: When the majority of a team believes “getting ahead” requires manipulation or deception, it creates a groupthink that is hard to break. Culture doesn’t need approval to spread, just acceptance.

4. Desperation Breeds Poor Decisions
Character: Dumebi
Insight: Dumebi’s desire to marry a man abroad clouds her judgment entirely. In HR, desperation to fill roles often leads to wrong hires, or worse, compromise in ethics and standards.

5. People Lie on Their Resumes… and in Relationships
Character: Multiple girls who lie about their status, partner, lifestyle
Insight: Just like CV fraud, people lie to fit in socially or professionally. It’s not just about screening, it’s about creating a culture where honesty is more rewarding than deception.

6. Unseen People May Be the Wisest
Character: Caro
Insight: Caro, often overlooked, provides wise commentary. In the workplace, the janitor may have better insight into the culture than the CEO. Always listen to the ones who observe more than they speak.

7. Emotional Labour is Still Labour
Character: Tessy & Amara
Insight: These characters are emotionally drained from trying to meet expectations. In the workplace, emotional labour (trying to appear cheerful, polite, professional) especially for women, should be acknowledged and supported.

8. Diversity Without Inclusion is Performative Setting
Character: Different personalities, backgrounds, behaviours
Insight: The girls are diverse but exclusionary; they form cliques, gossip, and create hierarchies. A reminder that having a diverse team is not enough if inclusion isn’t part of the system.

9. Sometimes, Conflict Is a Cry for Help
Character: Glory
Insight: Her combative behaviour masks insecurity and unmet emotional needs. HR should be skilled at distinguishing between problem employees and employees with problems.

10. Desire for Validation is a Hidden Driver
Character: Hallelujah & Kemi
Insight: These characters want public acknowledgment more than private peace. In organizations, people stay in toxic jobs or relationships because the title makes them feel seen.

New Campaign: 5 Series, 5 Months

Dear readers,

#Because a campaign is upon us!

#Friday #July #TGIF

Great news!!! From August to December 2025, you are invited to join me on a literary and professional adventure like no other — my 5 Series, 5 Months campaign.

You — and the rest of the world — will discover five unique fiction series, all written by me, each one packed with humour, drama, and suspense, and infused with real-life lessons and HR insights (because that's my field).

The goal? To revive a culture of reading, introduce bold African stories to new audiences, and connect fiction with everyday workplace insight.

Every month, a new series will be unveiled — and the first book in each series will be absolutely FREE.

You’ll get to travel through stories, reflect on characters and behaviours, and uncover practical insights. From the structure of a covert organization to the chaos of a community chasing marriage abroad, from calculated crimes to beautiful romance — every story teaches something about people, culture, and strategy.

So join me. Every Friday. Let’s read. Let’s reflect. Let’s reimagine HR — one story at a time.

Kicking off the series: Desperate Women

This five-part series follows ten young women in Eastern Nigeria, all desperate to marry men living abroad.

The first book, Dim Noo Abroad (Igbo for “My husband is abroad”), is my third novel — born from an offhand comment in 2011. I was chatting with two friends when one announced she was moving back to Nigeria. When we asked why, she said, “Because I want to get married and I don’t want to end up like those girls in the East always saying ‘Dim noo abroad.’”

That line stuck, and the story grew three years later, from scraps of dialogue to full-blown chapters written during a solo writing retreat. It resonated deeply with readers. One of my cousins even said it reflected her own university experience in the East.

So, if you love drama, know someone who lives it, or want stories that entertain and enlighten, this one’s for you. Even if you don’t, it still is.

You can read 'Dim Noo Abroad' HERE. Let’s read. Let’s reflect. Let’s reimagine HR — together

Once Upon a Covid Time

Dear all,

#Because it’s been 5 years!

#NewMonth #1April2025 #Lockdownniversary

In 2020, the world stood still. We masked up, locked in, and watched life as we knew it change forever. Some lost years, some lost dreams, some lost jobs, and some lost loved ones. The virus was deadly, but so was the misinformation that spread faster than the virus itself.

Three days before the #lockdown in Lagos, Nigeria, I was battling malaria. While waiting to see the doctor, I started writing a Covid-inspired novella “Eight Days to Live,” and finished it in just two days. And as the lockdown took full effect, I imagined what was running through people’s minds and what our feelings would say if they had voices. That led to “Voices Inside Your Head,” a lockdown-inspired short story.

I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of our dear Mama Mable Segun @95 - a remarkable Nigerian poet, playwright, and writer of short stories and children’s books. She was also a founding member of The Association of Nigerian Authors, established by Chinua Achebe.

I once wrote a story titled “I’m Taking It To The Grave”, inspired by a photo of her in Strasbourg, France, in 1983. A mind travel down memory lane, the story was longlisted for the #Afritondo #Prize in 2023 and published in their anthology, “The Anatomy Of Flying Things”.

It’s unfortunate that I never got the chance to give her a copy before her passing, but I hope many will read the story, smile, and, just maybe, believe it’s pure fiction not real life! 🤣🤣🤣.

You can grab a copy of the anthology on Amazon. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

Get it HERE.

What are you waiting for?

Happy reading!

Happy World Poetry Day!

 Dear all,

#Because it’s World Poetry Day!

Poetry is more than words; it’s rhythm, emotion, and a voice for the human experience. World Poetry Day reminds us to celebrate its impact on culture, storytelling, and expression.

Today also marks the anniversary of my first poetry book, a Novel in Verse and a first of its kind, titled "Road To Rapture".

Description:
A young woman’s story
As she journeys through life
Filled with love, pain, betrayal, deceit
Scandal, secrets, and the hope of recovery.

It’s a blend of prose and poetry, in a way you’ve never seen before. Even a priest who thought it was a religious book found out that it was a book filled with love, betrayal, and a lot of scandals 🤣. He was so engrossed that he almost arrived late for service! The interesting thing about the book is that you can’t skip a poem ahead, each one leads into the next, so every word is essential to the journey.

Want to experience it for yourself? Read the first few poems for free! Just send “Hi” to roadtorapturebycmo@gmail.com

So… what are you waiting for?

Happy reading!

PS: By sending “Hi,” you agree to receive my newsletter with updates on my writing and freebies. You also confirm that you are 18+ 😉.

Happy World Storytelling Day!!!

Dear all,

#Because it’s World Storytelling Day!

Today, people around the world celebrate the art of storytelling by sharing tales, culture, and inspiration across languages and borders. This year's theme, Deep Water, reminds us of the mysteries, depths, and hidden truths that stories can reveal.

Parents, read to your children. Aunties and uncles, share a story with your nephews and nieces. Grandparents, pass down wisdom through tales. Teachers and friends, you know what to do. Let’s fill this month with the magic of stories!

Writing Status: 2024 Missions Accomplished!

Dear all,

#Wednesday #HappyNewYear #January2025

Last year was busy yet amazing for me; new job, fun colleagues, new bond, exciting adventures, and never a dull moment! However, my baby (writing) suffered, constantly pushed to “tomorrow”.

The good thing is, every December, I promote my writing guide with the tagline: You can still write a book before the end of the year.

This time, as I wrote it, I told myself the same thing. So, I dusted off a dialogue-driven novelette trilogy idea I drafted back in 2021, inspired by the #Before movie series.
